Research And Inspiration A#19



All these pictures have something you can see clearly influenced my design. The orangish color is the thing that I chose to go with because it looks like hot wing color.

Assignment 19

For A#19 we created business cards, I feel like I could of scaled it better.
 This is the letterhead for the company, iy has plenty of space for writing.
The envelope has a bit more stronger colors and room for stamps, etc.

 This picture incorporates picture and text as well as the 2 color limit method.
 I like the way the text is a part of the handle in the hammer.
The colors in this picture aren't really that strong, so thats where Im getting my color ideas.

 I chose this logo because it has an interesting design and is pretty simple.
I think the Carrefour logo is cool because of how it uses the C in the background.
The reason I picked the burger king logo is because of how the colors match the intended audience. (hungry children)

Logotypes

-Graphic mark or emblem commonly used by commercial enterprises, organizations and individuals to aid public recognition.

- Called LOGO

-started being used in 18th and 19th century because of industrial revolution

- various books and advertisements shaped the art style of logotypes

-logos should be simple because people are not going to stare at a logo trying to figure it out

Principles

-Simple: Easy to recognize, not overdone.

-Memorable: keep simple and appropriate

-Timeless: will it still be effective in 50 years?

-Versatile: has to be able to look good on multiple formats

-Appropriate: the position of the logo should be appropriate for its intended audience

Spot color- each color is printed with its own ink

Pantone matching system-

Color gives the audience different emotions.

Interpretation of color may vary depending on age or culture.

color tends to follow trends, like fashion.

keep your color palette to 2 or 3 colors

combination mark- has text and some visual, integrated

Iconic- uncomplicated/abstract

logomark- incorporates the company name into the logo

The Grid- way of organizing content on a page using any combinations of margins, guide lines, rows and columns.
- instituted by modernism
- can assist the audience by braking info. into manageable chunks and establishing relationships.
-a grid consists of distinct set of alignment based relationships that act as guides for distributing elements across the format.
-every design is different, therefore every design will require a different grid structure.
- a grid is used to help clarifythe message being communicated

#14 Research and Inspiration

For Assignment 14 we researched a certain job relating to graphic design. I got art director, and art directors so I knew I had to put a picture of people because art directors work with people. I also wanted peoples eyes to be attracted to the poster (if it was real) so I put bright colors that would draw attention. I also put a japanese rising sun sort of line scheme on it so it would get even more attention.

What is a motion picture projector?
Shines light through the film and magnify the moving picture onto a screen for an audience.

The Linotype Machine | 1886 AD

Who is credited with the invention of the typewriter? Christopher Sholes.
What is a "stenographer"?A person employed to transcribe dictation.
Why did Sholes send a prototype of his typewriter to Clephane?Because he was the only one to accept it.
After the typewriter began production, why did Clephane pursue another machine?Because he thought something was still missing.
Who spent a year redesigning Clephane's typesetting machine?Ottmar Mergenthaler.
What is meant by "typesetting"?Designing a font and storing it in some manner.
 

How does the Linotype Machine differ from the typewriter?It allowed type to be set mechanically rather than by hand.
How did this machine change the newspaper industry?Making it possible for a small number of operators to set type for more pages on a daily basis.

How did the keyboard of the Linotype Machine differ from keyboards that we use today?
It doesn't have a shift key.
What is a slug?An assembled line of type cast as a single piece.
Why is the Linotype Machine the greatest advanced in printing since movable type?
It allowed typing to be even faster and more accurate.

The Gutenberg Press | 1450 AD

What is Johannes Gutenberg credited with?
Making the technology to print while using movable text.

 How did the printing press work?
The form was pressed against a sheet of paper.
What motivated Gutenberg to find a better way of creating books?
Working at the mint, watching goldsmiths and jewelers.
Why did Gutenberg experiment with metal type versus wood type?
Because wood can splinter and crack.
 
 What is moveable type?
A system of printing that uses movable components to reproduce the elements of a document.
What is a matrix?
A hard metal punch is hammered into a softer copper bar, creating a matrix.
What ink did Gutenberg develop that he used specifically for the printing press?
oil based ink
What is paper made from? Where did paper originate?
Wood pulp , created by the Chinese.
What is a "substrate"?
A fabric.
Who did Gutenberg seek to help with the invention of the press? Close to the end of the 5 years, what happened?  John Fust. Fust sued Guttenberg.
What was the first book he printed?
The bible.
 


How did the Gutenberg Press impact communication?Perfected script, book were made more rapidly, current information could be spread around the world.

By the late 1930s, presses had increased in efficiency and were capable of 2,500 to 3,500 impressions per hour. What is meant by "impression"?Sheets made.
Which printing process is the Gutenberg press an example of? Briefly describe the process?Relief- Movable type is placed into the press, ink is spread onto the type. Paper is placed on top. The press applies the direct pressure needed to transfer the ink to paper.

 What is intaglio printing and how is ink transferred? Image area is etched into the plate surface to hold the ink. Ink is applied, then rubbed with a cloth to remove the excess. Damp paper is placed on top. A press applies pressure to transfer the ink to the paper.

 

What is porous printing and how is ink transferred?Image carrier is attached to a screen. Ink is forced through open mesh areas.

What is lithography and how is ink transferred?Drawing is made on the plate with greasy ink or crayon. Water is applied.  When the ink is spread on top, the greasy parts accept the ink, the wet parts do not.

What variation of lithography is used by the commercial printing industry today?
Offset lithography.
How do printing presses used today compare to the Gutenberg Press?They are not powered by human force, and they are more efficient.
Describe four-color process printing using CMYK.
4 color process printing is when cyan magenta yellow and black are all used to create a colored picture.

The Codex and the Illuminated Manuscript | 1st century AD


What were the drawbacks of the scroll?
They only allowed for sequential usage.
 

What is a codex?covered and bound collection of hand written pages.
"Codex" is derived from the Latin meaning "block of wood". Why?Because when the paper is stacked together like that it looks like a piece of wood.
What is the difference between "sequential access" and "random access"?Sequential means you have to keep reading on to find what you want, but random means you can flip to any page to find whatever.
What were the advantages of using the codex?Random access, being sturdy, compactness            and ease of reference.
What helped spread the use of the codex?Rise of Christianity.
What replaced papyrus? Describe the process used to create it?Parchment paper- Hair and fat war removed from animal skin, smoothed out, hide was soaked in water, calcium/flour/salt were added, skin was stretched out and dried.
What is vellum?Finer parchment made from the skin of young calves.
Name several examples of current technology that utilizes the format of the codex.iPad and Kindle.
What led to a period of cultural and economical deterioration?When the Romans fought the Huns.

What does "illumination" refer to? What was included in this ornamentation?The border's illustrations. Initials of chapters or paragraphs, paintings in margins, borders and around text.

Why were these manuscripts reserved for religious purposes?Because it took so much work.
What is craftsmanship? Why is it important?
The work put into making the book. Its important because without it many of the books would have fallen apart.

Roman Alphabet

What was the basis of the Roman uppercase alphabet?
Greek alphabet
What were the purposes of the formal and informal styles of lettering?
Formal was for documents and a quick, informal style for regular writing.

Why is the Roman alphabet the most widely used and what contributions did it make?
They refine the art of handwriting.

From where did serifs originate?
When stonemasons added hooks so the chisel wouldn't slip.

When and where did lowercase, or minuscule, letters develop?
They developed to for sorting sentences.

What is a ligature and why were they utilized?
They are two characters that have been joined into one. They were used when the same characters were  next to each other.









Greek

How did Greeks come in contact with the Phoenicians?
Phoenicians regularly traveled to greece.

How was the Greek adaptation of the alphabet different from its predecessor?
The consonants were adapted to be vowels 

Why is the Greek alphabet considered to be the world's first true alphabet?
Has given rise to many other alphabets including the latin alphabet.

Name several similarities and differences between the Greek and modern English alphabets.
They used a more neat writing when writing formal scripts, and wrote quickly when doing routine writing.








Phoenican Alphabet

The Phoenician alphabet is based on what principle?
One sign represents a sound

Describe the shape of the letters and what tool created them?
Sylus, they looked angular and straight.

What two reasons made the Phoenician alphabet so successful?
Was easy to learn. Also the trading of the Phoenician people helped spread it around.

What long term effects on the social structures of civilizations did the Phoenicians have with the creation of their alphabet?


Its simplicity allowed it to be learned easily and could be used in multiple languages.

How did Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics become a forgotten language?All of the people who could read them left and died after the Romans took over.

What is the Rosetta Stone? Where was it discovered?
Stone containing the same inscription on it, but in 3 different languages. It was discovered just outside of Rosetta Egypt.
What three languages are included on the stone?
Egyptian hieroglyphics, demotic and Greek.
Why couldn't the text on the Stone be deciphered?
Because a chunk of the stone was missing. And none of the three texts were absolutely complete
Who finally deciphered the text? What was his breakthrough?
Jean Francios Champlloin. He matched the Hieroglyphic symbols with the greek version of the name Egyptian Pharoh Ramses.
Why does the interpretation of the Rosetta Stone have such significance?

 It has taught us more about the ancient Egyptians and the Egyptian hieroglyphics.

Cuniform and the Sumerians | 3,000 BC

The Sumerians were one of the earliest types of this kind of civilization? What does that mean?They were one of the first to involve themselves with different arts.
Why is the region of Sumer considered the Cradle of Civilization?Because it is where the first form of cuniform was created.
What could the Sumerians practice year round because of the regions climate?Agriculture. 

Why was Cuneiform created?It was used to keep track of business transactions.
What medium was used to "write" Cuneiform? Explain the process of preparing and writing on this surface?
Clay tablets were wet, written on, then set out in the sun to dry.

What did Cuneiform begin as a series of?
Pictograph

After it evolved over time, what shape did the characters of Cuneiform evolve into?
Wedges
After the Akkadians conquered, what happened to the Sumerian culture and written language?
The akkadians adopted the writings
What is a pictograph?

A drawing/ representation of something
Why did the creation of Cuneiform allow the Sumerians to become a sophisticated culture?
