Stephen Kroninger

What kind of art/design does he produce?
He makes art that is made up from a whole bunch of things to make it look like a person.

This piece of art was published in 1991 in the magazine Village Voice.

This piece was put into the magazine "Show"
In what publications/media studios has his work been featured?
t.v., books and magazines

What principles of design were utilized within the piece? How?
He uses the balance principle is most of his art. I can see this because if he has an object on one side he always has one on the other side to balance it.

What elements of design were utilized?
His art contains  changing value and colors. Sometimes the texture changes because it is used from different pieces of art.

Podcast #3 Principles of design

Define principles of design?

What do the principles of design affect?
The message of the work

What is the principle of repetition?
repeating an aspect or element in the design

Describe ways that the principle of repetition helps the composition/audience?
it ties the piece together and keeps the viewer's eye focused

What are ways that you can incorporate repetition into your designs?
Bold font, thick lines, bullet points, color

What should you avoid when working with repetition?
When you use it so much that it becomes overwhelming
What is the principle of proportion/scale?
the relative size and scale of various elements in a design

What is the most universal standard of measure when judging size?
the human body

How can the principle of proportion/scale be used as an attention getter?
it dwarfs the size of a human and intimidates them

What is the principle of balance?
the distribution of heavy and light elements in a design

Which kinds of elements/shapes visually weigh heavier/greater?
larger elements

What is another name for symmetrical balance?
formal balance

Define symmetrical balance?
when the weight of a composition is evenly distributed around the design.

What is another name for asymmetrical balance?
informal balance

Define asymmetrical balance?
when the weight of as composition is not evenly distributed throughout a design

What is the principle of emphasis?
stressing of a particular area of focus rather than the details of importance

What happens to a design that has no focus?
nothing stands out

What is a focal point and how is it created?
area where the eye tends to go first. created by making one element dominant

How many components of a composition can be a focal point?
no more than 1

What ways can emphasis be created in a design?
contrasting the primary element with its subordinate

What is the principle of unity?
the wholeness of a composition

What three ways can unity be obtained?
1.
put objects close to each other

2. make things similar

3. direct vision by a line that ravels around the design

What is the principle of variety?
difference and diversity

What ways can a designer add variety to a design?
an artist can vary textures, shapes and alter their contrasts, tone and intensity.

Why is it important to find the right balance between unity and variety?
so things look interesting but not chaotic

positive shape

What is ground?
area around the figure

What is another name for ground?
negative spce

When a composition is abstract (has no recognizable subject) what will the figure depend on? What does that mean?
Negative space so you can see an image, it means that the picture will only be partially designed

Why must a designer consider the composition as a whole?
so they can make sure they are getting their message across

What is the principle of rhythm?
organized movement is space and time

How is rhythm achieved?
achieved through the orderly repetition of any element, line, shape, value, tone, or texture.

What three ways can rhythm occur in a design?
1.
When the intervals between the elements are similar

2. with an organic sense of movement

3. a shape going through a sequence of steps

How does rhythm help a composition/design?
can control the readers eye movement

What is the principle of contrast?
occurs when two related elements are different

How can contrast help a design?
can draw the viewers eye to the piece

What is wrong with having too much or too little contrast in a design?less- becomes monotonous and boring
more- Becomes confusing

What is the key to working with contrast?

The title of this is "Campbell's soup can"
He used red and green as complementary colors.
I noticed that the colors don't fill in the arts empty space.

Color Scheme

This picture uses the triadic color scheme.

This picture uses the monochromatic color scheme.

Review week 8

Why must designers pay close attention to how color is utilized within a composition?
So they can get the viewers full attention on their art.

Why is the color wheel an important tool for graphic designers?
So the artist can find colors that can brighten up or draw attention to the art.

This poster shows how natural colors can draw the attention to the thing that the artist is trying to get you to see. The artist that made this picture has brought attention to the explosion by having everything around it be grey.

Within the electromagnetic spectrum, which waves allow us to see color?
Visible light
Describe white light?
Equal parts of all colors in the visible spectrum

How do we see color if objects "have no color of their own"?
They reflect/absorb colors in the visible light spectrum.
What is a glass prism?
A clear triangular shape that can refract white light into all the colors visible.
What seven colors result when white light is refracted through a prism?
Blue, green, yellow, violet, red, orange and indigo.
Describe hue?
The color itself
When does white light occur?
When all visible wavelengths hit the eye.
When does black light occur?
When no light reaches the eye.
How color is perceived depends on what?
Depends on the type of light seen with.
What is a color wheel?
visual tool that shows the relationship between primary, secondary and tertiary colors.
What are primary colors? Name them?
Red, blue and yellow
What are secondary colors? Name them?
A mixture of the primary colors. Orange, green and purple.

Colors of very low saturation
How can a neutral color help a design?
Help put the focus on other colors.
What are complementary colors? Name them?

Describe a split-complementary color scheme?
uses a color and two colors adjacent to it.

yellow, orange, red
Describe a warm color scheme?
USed to relate anger or excitement

How can you utilize the layers palette in Illustrator?
You use the layers to add certain effects or even to add dimension by putting one object behind another.

How do you create a clipping mask in Adobe Illustrator?

Review week 5

Space- Space is the amount of area the thing takes up. The space where it is is called positive space. The space where the art isn't is called negative space. The picture I've selected above shows that most of the space is positive space, which is good so that you can see the art more clearly.

Shape- Shape is the most basic outline for the object you are making. Shape doesn't have any inner detail, only the outline of what the shape looks like. The picture above shows the flaw of shape, overlapping things. The duck's foot seems to be missing, but really its just in front of its body.
Texture- Texture is the look of something that you could feel, like cloth or smooth stone. Texture can be used to trick people into believing that something is made from a certain material. The picture above shows a rough rock texture. This is an example of texture because you can relate to how that looks and feels.
Line- Lines are used in art to section off things or to convey a certain feeling to the audience. A horizontal line gives a feeling of calmness, while a diagonal line relates a feeling of movement. The picture above is a good example because of all the diagonal lines giving it a more popping feel to it.
Value- Value is the certain shade of the color you are using. Using one color throughout your work will give a very 2d feel to it. But if you use some other colors, you can give the art dimension to ake it more real. The picture above shows an example of the flat tone of value.

Review week 4

Why/how can icons be used to communicate?
Icons can be used to communicate by being used as warnings or helpful hints. Say there is a slippery substance on the floor, someone could put that yellow stand with the man slipping on it up and warn others of the danger.

These are two common icons you can see around.

What is the difference between copyright and public domain?
Public domain means that everyone can use the specified object without being sued or breaking some law.

How can you avoid plagairism in this class? In other classes?
You can avoid plagiarizing by reviewing what you've wrote and check to see if there are any things that are way too similarly worded to something from your source.
